Description

The Grainshed is a recently completed retreat in the Suffolk countryside, where contemporary design meets rural heritage. Designed by architect Marcus Lee — behind the popular WaterShed on the Isle of Mull — this Douglas fir timber-framed house is set within the frame of an old grain shed, with full-height glazing that frames views to the east, south and west.

A striking example of adaptive reuse, the project gives new life to the site’s agricultural past. Built within the original steel frame of the former grain shed, it preserves the character of the old structure while creating a warm, modern living space. It sits alongside other thoughtfully repurposed buildings on the farmstead including a converted grain silo (available to rent from June 2025) and a 14th-century Grade II-listed barn — reflecting the evolution of the site over centuries.

Inside, the house is bright and spacious, centred around a vast open-plan living area. At one end, the well-equipped kitchen is designed for proper cooking, with everything you need for family feasts or relaxed breakfasts. In the middle, a large dining table sets the scene for meals with family or friends, while at the other end, a woodburner and two sofas provide a comfortable place to unwind. Full-height windows let you watch the light shift across the fields throughout the day.

There are two comfortable double bedrooms. The main bedroom comes with a large ensuite bathroom featuring a bathtub set under a skylight, while a separate shower room serves the second bedroom and guests.

From the living spaces, you can look out over a historic horse pond and beyond to the tower of Lavenham's church in the distance. Next to the house, a vast open-sided portico — once a Dutch barn — now serves as a generous outdoor living space, ideal for barbecues, long lunches and games of table tennis.

Please note, the pond is unfenced, so children will need close supervision when outdoors.

Area

Tucked a mile down a country lane, The Grainshed offers both seclusion and easy access to local landmarks. Walk across the fields to Lavenham, often described as England's best-preserved medieval village, or head to The Cock Inn a mile away for local ales and Sunday roasts. Long Melford, with its grand halls and antique shops, is a 35-minute bike ride away, while the market town of Sudbury — home to the Gainsborough Museum and canoeing on the River Stour — is an easy ride along an old railway line.
