Description
Located in a renovated former workshop on a historic cobbled mews in East London, this duplex apartment in trendy Shoreditch has been expertly designed by award-winning architects Featherstone and Young — renowned for their stunning floating house, Ty Hedfan, in Wales. The property retains its unique post-industrial character while being transformed into a bright and modern living space, providing the perfect base for exploring London.
Upon entering the ground floor into an impressive double-height space, you will find a versatile reception area that can serve as a workspace, along with a double bedroom situated at the rear of the apartment. Timber-clad walls cleverly conceal a WC, a shower room and built-in storage. Stairs lead up to the living area on the first floor where an angled balustrade frames the double-height space. A generous south-facing window seat overlooks the tree-lined cobbled mews. This built-in seat transitions into a bench alongside the dining table, which connects to the kitchen worktop. At the back of the space, a large internal window spans the width of the apartment, drawing light into the central living areas and offering views of the original whitewashed brick walls.
The architects employed a minimalist, eco-friendly palette of materials designed to minimize waste and promote reuse. Key features include exposed brick walls and repurposed terrazzo tiles. Additionally, timber wall and ceiling panels made from sustainable woodchip materials add warmth to the interior. The apartment also boasts linoleum flooring crafted from coconut fibre and linseed oil throughout, along with electric underfloor heating for added comfort.
