Description

Nestled in a serene Suffolk village, The Engine House is a stunningly restored early 1900s industrial brick building, originally built to supply electricity to the stately home, Barton Hall. Following a fire in 1914 that destroyed the hall, the building became redundant and later served as a forge, a greengrocer’s store, and an artist’s studio. In 2017, the current owner, working with architect Michael Corsar, lovingly restored and extended the property. It now accommodates up to six people across three double bedrooms. Guests can enjoy river swimming, cycling and visits to the nearby vineyard, or simply relax in the private walled garden during warmer months. In cooler weather, cosy up by the wood burner, project a film, or wrap up for a walk across Knettishall Heath.

Area

Just three miles from Bury St Edmunds—a picturesque Suffolk market town around 1.5 hours from London. With medieval roots and beautiful architecture, the town is home to the ruins of Bury St Edmunds Abbey, Abbey Gardens, and the Gothic St Edmundsbury Cathedral. The town centre offers independent shops, a cinema and a traditional market. For food lovers, the area is particularly rewarding. Within five miles, you’ll find everything from relaxed, rave-reviewed restaurants to outstanding local bakeries and cafes. Whether it's Suffolk’s only Michelin-starred spot, an excellent neighbourhood bistro, or a much-followed artisan bakery, there’s plenty to explore nearby.
