Description

The Silo is a unique adaptation of a former grain store, now transformed into a peaceful hideaway. Its distinctive form — evocative of the industrial structures photographed by Bernd and Hilla Becher — has been carefully reworked as an imaginative example of adaptive reuse.

Step inside to a striking double-height space where the dining and sitting areas open through glazed doors to a deck overlooking the horse pond, fields and the steeple of Lavenham beyond. The space is lined with Sisaltech — an environmentally friendly insulation made from Harris tweed, sisal and sheepswool — and warmed by a Jøtul stove. To one side, a snug bedroom, where once the grain was stored with a glazed door facing east. On the opposite side, a compact kitchenette provides space for stove coffee and simple one-pot cooking, with a quarry-tiled shower room and WC just beyond.

Double-height glazing on the east and west side orientates with the rising sun and full alignment with the setting sun. A walk across the fields takes you into the historic village of Lavenham.

The Silo is one of two striking conversions on the site, alongside The Drift, also designed by Marcus Lee. Both can be booked separately or together for larger groups.

Please note, the pond is unfenced, so children will need close supervision when outdoors. Access to the Silo is via steps, so care should be taken when navigating the entrance.

Area

Tucked a mile down a country lane, The Silo offers both seclusion and easy access to local landmarks. Walk across the fields to Lavenham, often described as England's best-preserved medieval village, or head to The Cock Inn a mile away for local ales and Sunday roasts. Long Melford, with its grand halls and antique shops, is a 35-minute bike ride away, while the market town of Sudbury — home to the Gainsborough Museum and canoeing on the River Stour — is an easy ride along an old railway line.

Amenities

Bedroom: Double bed Living room: Single sofa bed Shower room Kitchenette Wood burner and logs Wi-fi Parking

Cost

From £150 per night plus £60 cleaning fee.
