Description
A peaceful retreat in the heart of Norton St Philip, a historic village set between Bath and Frome. The Garden House is a modest one-bedroom cottage, designed by award-winning Knox Bhavan Architects and completed in 2009 as part of a wider Grade II Listed project. Formerly derelict for over 20 years, the house was carefully restored with imagination and simplicity. The result is a bright, contemporary home that makes the most of its spectacular setting — facing onto the Church Mead with views of the Gilbert Scott-designed Church of St Philip and St James.
Inside, the building is conceived as a simple pitched-roof barn. A reused stone chimney with a new wood-burning stove and concrete hearth forms the centre of the plan. A mild steel checker-plate stair leads to a galleried landing under the exposed roof structure. Glass balustrades and wide oak floorboards — simply fixed with rose head nails — allow light to filter through by day and cast dramatic shadows by night. A roof light over the entrance and large corner glazing amplify the sense of space and bring the landscape in.
The living area includes underfloor heating beneath a new stone floor, a large fireplace, smart TV and glass doors opening onto the garden. The fully equipped kitchen centres around a wooden dining table, perfect for relaxed meals or celebratory feasts. A downstairs shower room also houses the washing machine. Upstairs is a king-size bedroom and, on the gallery, a sofa bed available on request (for adults only).
The house sits in a generous garden with an orchard, outdoor seating, a fire pit and direct access onto open fields. Private parking is available for two cars.
