History

The Unité d'Habitation in Firminy-Vert is one of five housing complexes designed by Le Corbusier as ‘vertical cities’ which combined residential apartments with communal facilities. The building in Fiminy is the largest and houses around 900 people, measuring 130 m long, 21 m wide, and 56 m high. Construction began in 1965 but was completed André Wogenscky, one of Le Corbusier's colleagues after his accidental death. All interior measurements are based on Le Corbusier’s modulor system. The top three floors of the building were originally occupied by a colourful and bright kindergarten open to the residents’ children for 30 years before it closed in 1998. The rooftop of the building served as a playground for the school and also as an open-air theatre for the building’s residents. Guided tours and access to the a show-flat—which contains original Pierre Guariche design furniture—are available with prior booking.
